The Handball Varsity Saturday in the University of Cambridge Sports Centre started off with the women’s match. The Cambridge team faced an Oxford team with two very strong individual players. With a strategic approach of isolating them in defense, the Cambridge team held up well but lost its player maker to an injury already in the first ten minutes of the match. Despite the final goal difference of 14 to 18 we are proud that a high proportion of our players managed to score goals and played together strongly as a team, in which each player carried their equal share of the strong defense against a strong Oxford team.
The second match of the day saw the Cambridge Men face a strong Oxford side who played with lots of speed and multiple threats in attack. The side matched up well with their opponents and scored impressively worked team goals and breaking through often, as well as drawing fouls and showing great strength in defence. Occasional errors allowed for fast breaks from the opponents who took advantage, leading to a scoreline that did not reflect the true battle on the court. The end score of the match was Cambridge Men’s 23 – 44 Oxford Men’s.
